The D

Just got home from a little concerto in Beantown. Tenacious D played. Minds were blown. Jeans were creamed. Socks were rocked... off.

I need to see the movie.

I had a very good thanksgiving. I feel that it is best summed up by this picture:

Booyah.

vacation

I am on vacation. Going home tomorrow. Family Thanksgiving Thursday. 10 year high school reunion on Friday. Hanging in NEPA (that's northeast PA) Saturday and Sunday. Coming back Monday morning straight into a half-day of work as is my style.

This has been a good week at work. Almost pure coding for the last week and half. Yes, I worked this past weekend but that was a) so I could not use vacation days this weekend, b) it's been coding and I was really enjoying it, and last but not least c) I need to clean my apartment. In other words, working was procrastination of housework. Honestly, I am at my most productive when procrastinating at something else.

As extra bonuses this week, EB had the new Tenacious D album in his car on Monday. That promptly got ripped to my machine. It is good. I am totally psyched for the film. Bonus #2 was my friend Lisa texting me this morning and inviting me to a little Thanksgiving dinner with her neighbors. That was a nice start to the weekend.

soundtrack of yr life

The other day one of my old college roommate found me on myspace. This is great. I love hearing form old friends. Well he put up one of those "posts to everyone" deals, and I thought it was fun so I decided to put mine up here. So here it goes:

IF YOUR LIFE WAS A MOVIE, WHAT WOULD THE SOUNDTRACK BE?

So, here's how it works:
1. Open your library. [iTunes, Winamp, Media Player, iPod, etc.]
2. Put it on shuffle.
3. Press play.
4. For every question, type the song that's playing.
5. When you go to a new question, press the next button.

Opening Credits:
-- Dashboard Confessional - Hands Down

Waking Up:
-- Bjork - Immature

First Day At School:
-- Pearl Jam - Alive

Falling In Love:
--Tenacious D - The Road

Fight Song:
-- Royal Crown Revue - Something's Gotta Give (live)

Break up song:
-- Keane - We Might As Well Be Strangers

Lifes Ok:
-- Cake - Race Car Ya-yas

Mental Breakdown:
-- Bad Religion - Drunk Sincerity

Driving:
-- Keane (again? wtf?) - Everybody's Changing

Flash Back:
-- Radiohead - Exit Music (For a Film)

Back Together:
-- The Ramones - 53rd & 3rd (live)

Wedding:
-- Wayne Kramer - Crack in the Universe

Birth of a child:

Final Battle:
-- Reverend Horton Heat - Mi Amor

Death Scene:
-- The Riverdales - I Think About You During the Commercials

Funeral Song:

Now take yourself back to your freshman year of college and do one yourself.

Post Script:
This is my new temporary addiction. I just keep starting over and going down the list.

working at home

So I've got the XP installed at home and I'm attempting to get set up so that I can work at home, if I so desire. It is important to plan ahead on this since getting an initial checkout of code takes a few hours. So far it worked OK.

Then I tried to actually do something.

I first tried to run a clean_and_udpate.sh script I have. This is a simple bash script I wrote to run in cygwin . I run this thing everyday at work. It didn't run at home. I got a lot of "command not found" errors for commands that are clearly not lost. So that'll be a pain to debug. I started to digging into this and immediately ran into problem #2: for some reason my scroll wheel doesn't work in my command window. That got annoying the very first time I tried to use it. I worked on this for a while and finally gave up. So far I have gotten nowhere on either problem, so I decided to get up to date on the blog reading. One youtube post later, I find out the the sound doesn't work on the windows side of this machine. And that's the third strike.

Fucking Windows.

good times with old friends

I had a pretty good weekend. A couple of friends of mine had a backyard campfire at their house and I got to see them and a bunch of friends that I had not seen in a long time. Too long of a time, really. That was really good.

Nothing else too exciting, I guess. Watched a bunch of movies today as it was gray and rainy and that was the best thing to do. I love rainy Sundays.

dual boot upgrade

I was having trouble with my DVD drive in my computer, and I was at a point where I my ubuntu install was a little shaky, I thought. I had done a lot of poking around while not really knowing what I was doing. Basically, it was time for a change.

I installed Windows XP on a 50GB partition. I updated the BIOS, updated windows, etc. I figured it wouldn't hurt to have a Windows install around.

I then took the following steps:
  1. Install ubuntu 6.06 (I already had the CD) on the almost 200GB partition I had left.
  2. Update everything (update manager) but openoffice.org
  3. Install the wireless card
  4. Install the display
  5. Test the sound.
    • it worked (it didn't last time I did this)
Well, shoot, that was relatively painless.

So now I have a dual boot machine with what I feel is a much more stable ubuntu install. The DVD drive still is on the fritz, I've been borrowing a CD drive from a dead computer at work for all this work. A firmware upgrade is about my last option before calling up dell support to see if I could get a new drive.

Other than that, I went to PA last weekend and loaded a bunch of firewood. So that's my fancy life.
